Zig (or Zig the Hyena) is one of the two titular characters of Zig & Sharko. (with Sharko), and one of the four main characters (alongside Sharko, Bernie and Marina)

He is a hungry brown hyena with ambitions to hunt Marina for eating her.

Bio

Due to his hunger and the limited supply of food on the island, Zig is desperate to eat Marina and is often willing to take advantage of her naive nature. Cunning and manipulative, he never fails to come up with a new idea to try and catch her (or get rid of Sharko), but nonetheless, his plans always backfire. As revealed in the episode "Desert Island Drought", Zig was born to a clan of extremely successful hunters who have found and killed many sea creatures throughout their lives. Zig's constant failures contrast sharply with the constant successes of his family.

However, in Season 2, his backstory is reimagined - as opposed to having a family, he was orphaned, until he was adopted by a female gorilla, who became his new mother. Around this time, he intended to eat anything, and also Bernie, who then became his adoptive brother. At first, he was unable to get along with Bernie, but after the latter picked up on his antics, he decided to help him whenever necessary. Around this time, he and Bernie met Sharko, and they enjoyed playing pirates with them, until they met Marina, who introduced them to new hobbies (at this time, Zig's appetite built up, and so, he tried to eat her whenever possible). When they were teens, they encountered the gorilla artist, who fell in love with their mother. They were both against seeing her leave, but after realizing how miserable she was after they got rid of him, Zig and Bernie called him back, and they successfully married not long after.

Personality

Zig is mischievous, cunning, clever, and devious who would go to many lengths by plotting to capture Marina and eat her. His best friend, Bernie also helps him out with plotting to capture Marina. However, as seen in some episodes, Zig is shown to be an anti-hero because he willingly teams up with either Sharko or Marina to help them fight other enemies.

Throughout Season 1, his only target was Marina to eat her, but Sharko always the one blocking his path, so he comes with numerous plans, he can't breathe underwater in this season as he isn't an aquatic animal.

In Season 2 onwards, he has numerous attempts, some were succeeded, but his plans were foiled, and some were actually successful, or well executed. This may be due to the plot making Sharko appear slightly weakerand easily being tricked or stuck in a fit than how he was in Season 1.

In Season 3 onwards,he seems to behave similarly but he also shows likings to things other than Marina.

In Season 4, Zig's character and plot seems to be completely rewritten: he is shown to be unnecessarily devious in his hunting plans to a point that Marina even is concerned about him. He is shown to be like possesed by something making him want to eat her except anything else, as seen in Welcome to mermaid island, Like cat and dog to name a few. He also is seen to be strong enough to even budge out of Sharko's hand when he held him tightly in Long-legged Sharko and can even kick him away forcefully without a sweat in Big Sister.

Relationship

  • Bernie: is Zig's companion, his only true friend and adoptive brother. Zig is willing to put aside his ways when Bernie is in trouble or missing. Whenever his confidence is low, Zig relies on Bernie to cheer him up. But sometimes Zig doesn't appreciate Bernie's plans and argues with him.
  • Marina: for Zig, it is his chosen prey to eat. In order to be close to her, sometimes he even resorts to disguises in order to pretend to be an experienced master in the matter. Sometimes he doesn't eat Marina in certain ways, but also cooperates with Marina in the best way possible.
  • Sharko: often he becomes a problem for Zig to get Marina. Oddly, Zig occasionally cooperates with Sharko to protect Marina from danger (when that danger is not himself). Although they can even spend leisure time together, as in the episode "Sharko and Zig on the Rocks". They also team up in "Lost in the Jungle", "Freezing Buddies" and so on.

Weaknesses

  • He isn't stronger (as Sharko or King Neptune), he is very weak and can be easily damaged by trying to make a coconut fall of a palm tree by kicking it (there are more examples).
  • He can't swim (in some episodes of season 1 onwards)
  • He gets beaten a lot by Sharko when he tries to eat Marina, and other animals in the island, Often in Season 1 Onwards.
  • He can be outsmarted by Sharko (mostly everytime)

Zig n'a qu'une seule idée en tête : croquer la belle sirène Marina ! Grillée, panée, bouillie, à l'huile ou en sushi, qu'importe la recette, pourvu qu'il la mange ! Pour parvenir à ses fins, il se fait aider par Bernie le bernard-l’ermite, un mollusque pas si bête ! Très agile, il imagine mille stratagèmes qui se retournent tous contre lui ! Mais Sharko a beau le jeter au fin fond d’un volcan ou l'aplatir comme une limande, Zig revient toujours à la charge!

Translation: Zig has only one thing in mind: to eat the beautiful mermaid Marina! Grilled, breaded, boiled, in oil or in sushi, whatever the recipe, provided he eats her! In order to achieve his ends, he has been helped by Bernie the hermit crab, a mollusk who is not stupid. Very agile, he imagines a thousand stratagems that all turn against him! But in spite of Sharko throwing him to the bottom of a volcano or flattening him like a flounder, Zig always comes back to the charge!

Appearance

Zig does not have a very strong resemblance to any real-life hyena species, although the claimed prototype is a brown hyena. He has no visible neck, small ears with sharp points, and red eyes placed closely to each other. He has light brown fur, a darker brown mane on his back, and a short, paintbrush-like tail. Similarly to Sharko, his snout is prolonged. He has large, square teeth that are occasionally drawn as more fitting carnivorous teeth. He is scrawny and of short stature with thin limbs.

Abilities and Powers

  • From Season 2 onwards, Zig sometimes hatches effective plans and he can easily execute them successfully on Sharko(With or Without Bernie). In Season 4 he often goes into head to head combat in chase sequences and can also dodge Sharko's attacks on him as seen in The Perfect Copy and Long-legged Sharko, instead of simply being knocked out and defeated.
  • Zig knows and learns about Sharko's weakness or fears (That's because they were best friend and childhood friends).
  • Zig is a very talented and orpair cook. Also a pretty good handyman, not on the same level as Bernie. And Lastly, he can strategize with his smart brain. But quite clever.

Trivia

  • Zig's most favourite place to sleep is on a hammock shown throughout the series, which gets torn whenever he sits upright on it in Season 1 as a gag.
  • Zig's canon signature/autograph style is a "X" mark. The only time he didn't sign in this style was in The Creaking Door and is unexplained why he doesn't.
  • "An Evil Panda" is the only episode where Zig and Sharko are friends instead of enemies, along with "Teen Rebels" but there was the battle in the past.
  • He's the only main character to appear every single episode in season 1-3. Bernie was absent in some episodes throughout Season 2 and Season 3, while Marina and Sharko were both absents in Teen Rebels since they weren't seen as adults.
  • He shows traits of claustrophobia.
  • There was a time when fans confused what animal Zig was, many saying he was a dog or a wolf, but episodes like The Horribly Hungry Hyena or Save the Hyena!, make it clear that it is a hyena.
  • In the episode Goin' Home it's confirmed that he is Kenyan.
  • ZIg is the only main character that isn't in love or in a relationship with someone, maybe because he's hunger doesn't let him to have feelings or love (Fishy Story is the only episode where Zig seems to like romantically someone).
